(RW) Mobile Tower!

Post by Ryan B »

We had to setup a tower cab on the roof of our facility last week due to an Asbestos issue. It was actually really fun to work outside. There's a horrible mug of me in the first shot on the far left (working local aka tower).

I'm at Duluth MN KDLH we're a level 6 up/down (tower/tracon). I actually worked a lot of traffic from the roof (including multiple F-16 flights) and on the PET2000's (orange portable transceivers - horrible volume control and range). Our amazing tech ops guy made it possible to talk to the downstairs tracon through some really ingenious cabling. But we had to staff two other positions the entire day (basically a coordinator position to go between rooftop tower and tracon).

Hardest part was hearing the planes (we have a lot of heli ops operate from the ramp in front of us). But we got a lot of questions about the whole operation and nobody complained lol! Here's a few pics and some of the guys working. Later into the evening we closed up the extra coordinator position and one guy handled that and local combined.

Very cool, thx for taking the time to post those.

And there I was thinking it was a low point for me when I was controlling from the ramp of the Nashua airport from the laptop while walking from the restaurant to the FBO. Little did I know, I was just following in the FAA's footsteps and transitioning to a temporary mobile tower....tracon....and ARTCC :)

You chose the ramp and not the bathroom as the low point? Interesting... :ugeek:

That's another story for another time, I was just drawing a direct parallel between Ryan's situation and mine. :)
