Lost Communication

Post by jalex85 »

A couple of weeks ago something very unusual for PE happened. I lost communications with Center. Fortunately I was very near the APP area so I could contact Approach and continue with the flight without problems.

My question is, what should I do in case of a lost communication situation and can't contact any other station? Should we keep flying? if we reach TOD, should we start our descent? what if lost coms happens during approach, should we continue with it and land according to the chart?

I know it is very unlikely this will happen again on PE but just curious about this.

Thanks for your help!

We review lost comms procedures in this workshop if you're interested: http://www.pilotedge.net/workshops/ifr- ... tec-routes

There are a number of steps you can try if you lose comms, such as working out an alternative frequency and trying a nearby tower. If you truly have a 2 way communication failure that you can't resolve then there are two general courses of action:
1) if you encounter visual conditions, you should land at the first practical opportunity
2) otherwise, if not in visual conditions, continue along your cleared route. If your route overflies an IAF or feeder fix for an approach to your destination airport, then you can shoot the approach from there

Squawk 7600, fly your cleared route and get it done :)
