yestarday, departing Burbank, i used active sky, next, overcast, raining, unfamiliar airport, kinda lost taxiing....departing vny1.vny dep from runway 15 initially then controller said, wind change plase dep runway 26 from an intersection, ( i had enough runway from there) NOT A FACTOR) intersection was just in the corner, i took of and interesting part comes::::,,,,keith says are you departing on vn1? i said yes..... well you should be flying head 290, not 210,,,well friends because of the changed runway rushed unfamilliar rained airport departure, i did not rebrief the departure procedure....in real life that would maybe cost my life.....
so always debrief take off, dont care of anyother planes coming, or if its raining and youre not very familiar where you are, if not completely confortable hold , rethink, rebrief, then takeoff.....
this was a real lifetime experience.

Just use aeronav to brief the procedure before you fly it.

That's a great point and learning lesson, Luis. I think we all are guilty of rushing ourselves in a lot of scenerios. When rushed, we are all mistake-prone. Better on PE than the real skies. Yet, another benefit of PE.

I was flying out of SEA today and there was a small cell of medium precipitation and turbulence about 5 miles upwind from the runway. One aircraft took off, reported moderate turbulence above 3000. My Virgin America aircraft and 5 other flights were offered a take off clearance from the tower but all declined and chose to park and shut down to wait out the possibility of some unknown/unexpected weather. I thought it showed really great consideration for safety and for the comfort of the passengers.

Real world airline procedures require rebriefing and verifying our takeoff data and departure procedures anytime there is a runway change. This came about mostly because guys were taking off with the wrong runway or departure programmed into the FMS, leading to lateral deviations. Better to learn this lesson on PE than from a letter from the FAA.

Why no runway assignment is given by clearance delivery for IFR flights? It's a pain having to re-program the FMC and rebrief the whole departure at the last minute when ground control says "DAL123, taxi to runway x". It would be great having the runway on atc clearance, especially on multi runway airports such as SFO, LAX or LAS.

Nuno, if you're not sure of the runway in use, ask. Pilots who fly frequently out of the airports with parallel runways quickly learn which ones are typically used for departures. For example, LAX uses 25R and 24L for departures, unless you're coming out of the south complex, in which case you might get 25L.
Btw, SFO is notorious for last minute runway swaps from 28L to 28R for the departure runway. As a result, most crews brief BOTH, and if the runway does indeed change, all they need to do is alter the FMC quickly.

In real life, I often get something similar to the following after reading back my clearance: "Cherokee 9448J, readback correct, expect runway 4L."
I don't recall if PE has done this for me in past flights.

The amusing thing at SFO in west ops is that United often causes problems in the queue because the crews receive their final numbers from the dispatcher as they approach the runway. They set up for 28L and as soon as the tower controller advises them of the switch, the crew is often still waiting for numbers. Those United flights are taxied out of the queue and make the tower controller really frustrated because the whole sequencing with departing and arriving aircraft goes out the window for 5 minutes. Fun stuff on the radio!
