I interviewed an instructor today that I'm considering doing my instrument rating with. He said we will not fly in the real plane until I can pass 10 scenarios on the Frasca sim. He says the 10 scenarios were all developed from real life situations that resulted in accidents. He would not tell me the scenarios. Any one have any ideas so I can try me in my xplane rig?
I guess there would be a failed vacuum scenario, failed alternator, pitot icing, non functioning DME on an ILS. What else?
IFR training scenarios
Re: IFR training scenarios
My personal reaction is that is a weird way to teach. Why not go up and do basic attitude flying on nice smooth day?
Re: IFR training scenarios
True enough. But I already have several hours of basic attitude flying under the hood with a different instructor of course.
Re: IFR training scenarios
What did you tell him you were looking to work on? Running scenarios on a Frasca isn't a bad way to teach, but it's not how I would start out teaching an instrument student. The scenarios sound like they'd be more suitable for a pre-checkride review because it sounds like they'll incorporate a lot of information from all of your instrument training. How many hours do you have that you can use towards the instrument rating?

Re: IFR training scenarios
I've got 13.4 hours of inst instruction. But that's been spread out over time as I started on my IFR ticket twice over the last 17 years of flying, but 2 moves caused me to stop each time.
Re: IFR training scenarios
Ok, interesting. Well it's certainly an unorthodox way to teach, but if he's got good references and seems compatible with you, then perhaps it will work out. Ultimately it's up to you, since you're doing the hiring.
