You would proceed to your clearance limit at the last assigned altitude, in this case direct LAX at 12,000; however, a couple of points should be noted. Typically, if not usually, you will be assigned or cleared for an approach to be flown after the final fix of the STAR. The phraseology would be, "after RIIVR, cleared ILS runway 25L approach." Additionally, as the chart explains, if you lose contact with ATC, you should join the ILS 25L approach.

If you're approaching the end of the STAR and haven't been told what to expect, I would question the controller.

Since you were cleared for the approach, and since RIIVR is an IAF, there is no ambiguity about the altitudes after RIIVR. They are all published on the ILS RWY 25L approach plate.

True, but if the controller said, "After RIIVR, cleared ILS RWY 25L approach," then you have direct evidence that the approach is flyable from RIIVR, which means everything you need will be on the ILS RWY 25L approach plate. Also, the STAR ends at RIIVR.
