Question about practicing ILS procedures?

Post by nigelmcelwee »

If I wanted to practice shooting ILS approaches at John Wayne, how would I go about asking the controller? Should I just announce that I would like to takeoff and practice a particular ILS procedure?

Either file IFR with SLI aa the only fix or just call clearance and say you want VFR practice approaches starting with ils 20R

Easy peasy

I've done this a couple of times now, especially when I'm doing a checkride in a new sim aircraft. You file IFR with the departure and destination airport as KSNA. I usually put Seal Beach (SLI) in as the lone navigation fix since it's used as a reference in the procedure for the IAF. Then in the notes I write 'practice ILS full procedure'. This is actually covered by the PE rating "I-01" in detail:

The runway designators are out of date, but the rest of the information is valid. You'll get radar vectors to Seal Beach, then follow the full procedure on the chart from there.

049 heading leaving SLI at 4000
Left turn at SAGER to pick up the 144 outbound radial from Pomona and that's the entry point into the procedure turn.
Procedure turn to the 196 heading where you pick up the localizer
Follow it in to land.
