IFR Clearance gave me different departure
I recently flew an IFR from John Wayne to Van Nuys. Forgive me because I am very new to the IFR online flying but I filed KSNA CHANL2.SXC KVNY which is the channel 2 departure to SXC. However, clearance gave me SLI -> LAX-> CANOG Direct KVNY. Should I have mentioned the ChANL2 dept in my request?

You might want to have a look here.
http://www.fly.faa.gov/rmt/nfdc_preferr ... tabase.jsp
The SoCal airspace is so busy, TEC routes are often required to get from A to B. Even beyond TEC routes, there are sometimes preferred FAA routing that may be issued by ATC. My recommendation is that anytime you fly in SoCal IFR, check for a TEC route.
By the way, this is covered in Pilotedge's wonder pilot training program(I-3 test). Have a look!

It would help if you also mentioned your aircraft type ICOA code and equipment suffix.
Also check out the http://www.myflightroute.com site for more information regarding TEC routes and other routes in the PilotEdge network. I always start every flight with myflightroute.com

thanks guys! I figured it was my route. It was a type beech 1900 and the route I filed had a min altitude of 16000. for a flight of 44 nm I suppose that was a bit too high lol!

If there's a TEC route for the city pair that you're flying to/from, you're going to get that TEC route, and you're going to get the altitude associated with the TEC route.
