What do I do if I crash?

Post by PenfoldPilot »

I had an overspeed issue on approach over the weekend and really struggled to get the plane on the runway safely. It all worked out but it got me thinking. If I were to have a crash on landing or during flight what is the correct procedure with ATC? It doesn't seem right to just log off. I am not suggesting an Accident Report and visit from an Inspector but I would like to know the correct etiquette.

Thanks!

First and foremost, you should try to minimize instances of losing control of the airplane. Beyond that, though, if people do have an incident, they generally seem to want to discontinue the simulation and get offline asap. We're used to it at this point.

The alternative is for us to close the runway for a minimum of several hours. Given how infrequently accidents happen in the real world versus a simulator, I don't think there's a lot of training value in us simulating a multi-hour runway closure due to an incident in a sim.

I would say just tell the controller you're going to discontinue and sign off. I can't think of much else you could do.

Haha I like the idea of having an inspector come speak with you. Better yet, I want to hear a controller tell someone they have a phone number for them to call on PE, especially when someone gets a good talking to. :)

Also have had similar issues and wondered what to do. Wanting to balance the possible "learning" moment but not wanting to disrupt PE operations or other pilots.

I have random failures enabled on my X-plane set-up. Once I had a dual engine failure just passing over the runway threshold. I was able to land without incident but ended up dead on the active runway with no way to move to clear the runway ( I did a poor job of managing my speed during the roll out). I called the tower and informed of my situation and requested a tow. The tower controller remained in character and said he would call the FBO asked if I needed any additional assistance. To which I thanked him and stated my intention to disconnect.

I figured this was the best of both worlds. I got the benefit of the exchange without tying up an active runway for an excessive period of time.

Simulating the radio calls you'd make from a non-fatal incident is perfectly fine.

So I have an interesting story that is topic related....Last night I was doing VFR circuits at KSNA and I fly X-plane so it simulates birds and deer. I was on a touch and go and my landing lights illuminate a whole flock of birds on the runway just as I was easing the throttles up to take off again. Right at VR the birds smack into the engines and windshield with a big thud and my christmas tree illuminates in the cockpit. I struggle to keep the plane upright and the cool thing in xplane is when this happens it shifts your pilots head in a certain direction so with trackir on, you cant center your head...so its kind of like the virtual "you" got hurt in a way....you are all disoriented and the plane winds up stalling on the runway so I had to call and disconnect from the service.

a wild experience!!

Ha, nice, Nigel! The threat of a bird strike always keeps you on your toes in X-Plane...I just wished there was a way to turn the darn deer off. Birds are one thing, but it is a little annoying when deer seem to run out onto the runway on EVERY takeoff run!

YOU CAN!!!
Look up "Deer Kit Removal" on the .org downloads manager in the utilities section.
It does not really remove the deer - just makes them invisible!!!

Ha! So does that mean you might hit one and you wouldn't have even seen it coming?

It is that awesome feature with X-plane that allows you to fly (or taxi) through anything solid looking - so even if you did hit it, you would not know it...
One of the best modifications to get in my opinion.
If I may quote a world renowned philosopher...

DUCK SEASON?? DUCK SEASON??? NO, NO!! It is DEER SEASON!!
