As for the licenses, I suspect you were sent a different file for each license. You should check and then make sure each computer has its own license file. That may well be related.

Thank you. I went to the HAMACHI VPN thing after striking out on the LAN, and because others reported it working, and because the developer himself points you to it with a cheery "godspeed you're on your own". Other than than that no good reason at all.

Yep, I pinged the MAC and the PC from each other and they both report fine, no data losses.

Yep, I ensured one machine was slave and one was master then clicked connect. Listening occurs but no connection. Oddly it doesn't seem to initiate FROM the PC. But will initiate from the Mac...The PC app never seems to "dial out" when clicking to connect -- on the MAC the app immediately "does something" like display a transmission rate (0.0) or error code but the PC app just looks like it's doing nothing...the log file shows it's active. Odd.

Maybe there is a MAC firewall that I haven't turned off? I am not familiar with MAC but will investigate. EDIT: Mac Firewall is OFF and never was on.

Happy to post the whole log, just didn't want to clutter up stuff. See below. The first failures will have been due to incorrect IP and Ports which have since been fixed. Maybe there is something useful in there. (This is the PC log file).

Yep, I have two files for licenses -- I was sent two copies of a "licence" file. There's no differentiation between the two and supposedly: "License file works on any WIN, MAC, Linux computers and no longer uses hardware ID. " So thats a dead end.

The reason people report using Hamachi is because they're not on a LAN, they're all doing this over the internet.

Can you clean out the log files and do a single connection attempt, then post both log files?

I want to make sure that you're actually pressing the smartpilot connect button on BOTH machines, starting with the master first, is that right?

I tried another test case scenario to eliminate the Mac and use my 2nd PC...I kept the office pc downstairs as the SLAVE. Initiated connection from the Upstairs PC. The downstairs slave PC never connects or shows anything like it is working (yes I mashed connect on both PCs apps (thanks for the attention to detail) ...The initiating PC app goes through connection steps and tries to connect but never does. I'll post it's log file when I use the sneaker net to go up there:

HOT DOG! Now we are making progress! Whoo hoo

Bypassing the evil sullen "downstairs PC" and connecting Upstairs PC and MAC ---> CONNECTED! For the first time ever and nearly instantly. Yeah!

Only problem-- my Baron was exploding over and over again and maybe 10 ft beneath the tarmac on the Slave (Mac). No cockpit views worked. Say what? Rwy follows terrain is UNCHECKED on Mac. Will have to see if it is on Upstairs PC. What the heck else could do that. Upon disconecting the plane is tossed into the air in a loop before impacting the tarmac...umm, ok...I guess that's progress


Problem 2 - I lied above about only 1 problem -- so what is evil downstairs PC's problem?? Per my previous post it seems like it never dials out??? It's on the same silly network and the pings work so what could it be?
Should I re-download the plugin...Rabbit hole? Evil downstairs pc is my primary flight pc....

Once this works - please tell me that I can just give out my IP address to someone on the internet in order to set up a remote connection...

You have terrain differences between your sims. Make sure the MASTER is the one which is at the lowest altitude. Use data input&output screen before connecting to see your exact altitude (MSL). It's either custom scenery or the HD mesh which would be causing it.

Not sure what's up with your downstairs PC, sounds like a networking issue, check for firewall on that machine. Also make sure IP's are correct.

As for someone connecting from outside...you would actually need port forwarding for that. Configure your router to forward the TCP & UDP ports to the internal IP of the machine that you'd like to use. Then, give the other person your EXTERNAL IP (the one you get from whatismyipaddress.com). They will connect to that IP (which is the external interface of your modem/router), then your router will kindly FORWARD that data (hence PORT FORWARDING) to the internal machine of your choice.

If your internal IP's change at all (mine do all the time since I'm using DHCP), you will have to update your port forwarding settings each time your IP changes. Basically, check your external and internal IP's, make sure you give the right address to your buddy and make sure you're forwarding from the router to the machine of your choice using the correct IP.

Or, you can use Hamachi, but I've never done that, and have never had problems using the method above with 4-5 different people in the past.

Thanks again. It's so vindicating to get something working even if it is just a plane exploding on the tarmac! At least my smart copilot is dyng in there with me now...

Both machines have KSNA scenery but I know the Mac doesn't have HD Mesh 2 running. I think the upstairs pc may have HD2 on it in addition to KSNA download. I went to the upstairs and somehow managed to take off despite dragging my clone through the tarmac...they are flying now and it seems operational..the landing should be interesting. I was unable to manually adjust the altitude/elevation on the Mac (slave) so I guess you just have to have identical custom scenery or as you say make the lower plane master. I never would have thought of that. Thanks.

After all this I'm quite sure I didn't mistype the IP addresses anywhere. It's got to be a firewall issue - but I looked at that and X-plane is authorized... I'll delete those entries and see if X-plane re-writes them. Next I guess I'll redownload the plugin but that seems to be unlikely to be the culprit.

Thank you for the overview of port forwarding. I mostly follow.."Configure your router to forward the TCP & UDP ports to the internal IP of the machine that you'd like to use." I believe that this is done in the manner I have done for the FOSCAM baby monitors I use. It seems straightforward with the Airport Extreme router which has a simplified interface for us dummies. The Static IP thing would seem to rear it's head again. But if using DHCP (as I do) can be worked around by just looking up the IP address of the machine prior to configuration, then I think I can handle that. Thanks especially for clarifying WHEN to use the external facing IP address. It does get a bit confusing.

I will of course devote excessive time trying to get downstairs PC to work - it's just my nature...why won't that thing work! I thank you profusely for the gift of your time in this. Again.

Even a Broken Clock is Right Twice a Day...

You are not going to believe this...I just got an email from the developer. Apparently the two keys he sent me -- labeled identically as "licence.key" are UNIQUE and an undocumented feature of smartcopilot is that it will not function if two of the same keys are present in the respective machines.

The broken clock part comes in because through pure luck, good or bad, I had placed one of the keys - called it phantom key 1 in the Mac and phantom key 2 in the upstairs computer. "evil" downstairs computer had phantom key 1 which conflicted with the Mac - remember I noted the odd behavior of the plugin not visibly doing anything but apparently logging some actions.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I guarantee you that an average user is NOT going to get a text editor and look inside the key files he just received for his purchase in order to determine which identically labeled key is key1 or key 2. Definitely something he need to improve (how about labeling Key1 Key2 Key3) or at a MINIMUM documenting this little bug, er feature. Makes me wonder how many people ever buy more than 1 key. I bet it's not many. I'll be sure to pass my feedback on to him.

As to the elevation consternation - that was just weird stupidity. Somehow Mac Slave was on KPSP instead of KSNA. Thus the elevation difference. So glad I noticed mountains in the background that looked too tall to be from the runway of KSNA.

Phew. I think I will catch my breath before embarking on an outside the lan smartcopilot flight!

As for the licenses, I suspect you were sent a different file for each license. You should check and then make sure each computer has its own license file. That may well be related.

And there it was.

I disagree that he needs to improve the plugin in this regard. His plugin looks for a file called license.key, and he sent you multiple licenses, one to use on each machine. That's something you need to keep track of. He sent me a zip that contained 5 folders, each with a license.key (I asked for 5 licenses). It was reasonably obvious to me that they weren't exactly the same file just because they had the same name. If it was literally the same file with the same content, then he'd have only sent one copy, not 5 copies placed carefully placed in named folders inside the zip.

That said, it wouldn't hurt for him to include detailed instructions in the email for people who buy multiple licenses to let them know exactly what to do.

I'm glad you're up and going, though, it definitely sounded like a lot of work.
