Anyway to receive audio on both radios?

Post by limbo696 »

I'm new to both X-Plane (XP) 10 and Pilotedge. I'm getting ready for my first flight and I cannot figure out how to receive audio on both com1 and com2 in the stock Baron 58. When you hit the com1 and com2 buttons on the audio panel, XP seems to just transmit and receive on that single chanmel. It is impossible to receive on both audio channels? If so, is there a mod or a fix for this? (Are all XP planes like this?) Does this mean that if I'm tuned to ATC on one channel and I want to get ATIS information on a second channel, I should inform ATC that I am leaving comms to get ATIS information on another channel?

Only one radio can receive ATC comms at a time on PE at the moment. It is possible, though, to configure the audio panel so that you're transmitting on com1 while receiving the atis on com2. The best way to test this is to have the online map (http://map.pilotedge.net) open, run some tests and see what frequency is listed on the map. Use caution, it refreshes every 10 seconds on the client side.

Not all xplane audio panels are configured the same, so what you experience on one panel may be different on another.

I personally don't use the xplane ATIS, it's not a skill that I practice when I'm using the sim, I just pull weather from skyvector in another window.

The frustration caused by trying to work out what the panel might be doing in one plane versus the other isn't worth it for me, so for that reason, and others, I just don't use the xplane atis.

If I understand correctly, that's a serious limitation of X-Plane...being able to receive on two radios is often an important aspect of comms with ATC. You might want to monitor depature and ground or tower, for example. Your second sentence confuses me. Why would I ever want to be able to ever transmit on a radio without being able to hear a response (i.e., transmit on com1 while only listening to com2)?

I've been listening in on comms and ATC has frequently asked the pilots whether or not they have ATIS, so it seems like you need to provide them with something....just make up one?

Sorry for the confusion, when I said xmit on com1, I also meant receiving on com1 as well while you're listening to com2.

Yes, for now I make up the ATIS code for my calls until we integrate the full ATIS system from myflightroute. As I said, receiving the ATIS isn't a skill that is perishable or something I personally want to practice.

I'm a bit late...

I wrote a small plugin that allows one to enable a second comm channel, for aircraft with an audio panel that doesn't allow it.

Thanks! I'll check the plugin when I next get a chance. I am still a little confused about whether or not it is possible to monitor to radio channels simultaneously in X-Plane. According to Keith, it is not possible to monitor two Pilotedge channels at the same time (e.g., a tower command channel and a approach/center channel at the same time). In FSX, it does appear possible to monitor a Pilotedge channel and the computer ATIS channel simultaneously. I did see the key bindings for turning on and off monitoring in X-Plane and I tried playing with them to no effect so I just resigned myself to monitoring only one radio channel at a time.

You can hear both X-Plane ATIS on COM2 and PE on COM1. Of course, there may be plane-specific implementations of the audio panel that are interfering, but I've definitely done it on both the Carenado 208 and F33 Bonanza.

The PE plugin provides the ATC comms and it's single channel only, as Keith mentioned.

Note that some planes have audio panels that allow you to enable both a primary and secondary comm channel simultaneously, and some don't. Enabling a second comm channel just gets you the ATIS info at this point.

limbo66, you should be able to pick up the ATIS on the 2nd radio using the key bindings, that's something I've tested before without any problem.

Yup, key bindings, which I always seem to overlook, will work.
