Retaking exams...

Post by Bidimus »

I've seen two approaches (no pun intended) to taking the exams. First is to keep taking them over until you get it right. Second, an my preferred method, is to do copious amounts of studying and attempting practice flights before trying for the exam in hopes to get a pass on the first try.

My question is, is there a limit to the frequency at which you can retake exams? As an extreme example, if I took my V-3 and failed due to a stupid oversight, could I go back to John Wayne right away armed with that knowledge and just try again immediately?

I ask because I've been tight on time this week and haven't had time to practice but I have been studying the V-3 in such great detail that I'm actually feeling really confident I could pass on my first try. I know enough not to bust the Bravo and where the shelves are. But if I fail, I'd like to come back after a break and try again the same evening while it's all fresh in my mind.

There isn't a formal limit, just take it again when you feel you're ready. If you failed because there was a fundamental lack of understanding of a concept, it would behoove you to sort that issue out, but if it was a tactical error and you feel you could take it again immediately and pass, then by all means, have at it.

Ok cool thanks. Kind of what I was hoping.

Ya if it's a lack of understanding then I'd definitely go back to the study board first. :) With the weekend finally here though I'll likely do a practice run first anyway. I'm kind of cautious like that. lol

So if the practice goes perfectly...what is the training value in conducting the formal evaluation at that point? There are no consequences for failure so if you feel like you have a solid understanding of the process, then I'd recommend calling for the rating and doing it. If you fail, then it was a good practice run. If you do well, then you're done and you can move on.

Flying something like the V-3 is pretty time consuming, I'd hate to see you fly it twice for no good reason, but that's just a subjective comment from my end, you are welcome to follow your own process.
