Notification of Mistakes?

Post by ridikamus »

A few days ago, I flew from KLGB through the Special Flight Rules bravo route and then onward up north after-hours (after 11PM Pacific). I adhered to the rules of the bravo transition until the very end, when I got a little anxious and forgot about that bravo shelf above me. I climbed from 4500 to about 8500, clearly busting the bravo. For the SFR transition no radio communication is required, so unless I picked up flight following I could be on any frequency. My question is, if the PE controllers had been active, is there some way for them to get in touch with me and let me know I made that mistake? Would they do so?

Yes, the PE Client would have popped-up a message (provided the controller saw the bust) with a frequency for you to call. You'd call and get told off - then move on :) Think there's an old thread somewhere on the forum about someone who got that message because the controller accidentally sent it. If the controller was busy, PE's version of a phone number is through email.

If you don't contact ATC for the rest of the flight there is generally no back end way you'll be notified in flight about the deviation.

Assuming ATC saw the mistake and reported it, you'll most likely get an E-mail from me letting you know that it happened. Assuming you don't make it a habit my E-mail will just be advisory in nature.

This is incorrect, the feature you talk about exists, but doesn't actually work on PE. The case where it happened was an accident and resulted in a non-sense message to the pilot.

Huh, good to know. I took "mistake" meaning "the controller didn't mean to send you the freq, but if we need to, we can contact you". If you don't mind me asking - what do you mean when you say "does't actually work on PE"? I would assume that if the feature exists and could transmit a frequency to the pilot in real-time, that would be quite useful to have in the case of, say, an airspace violation with a guy on 122.9 and squeaking 1200. Would it just be too much workload on the controllers? I'd imagine that you could probably leave the use of the function at the controller's discretion, so that if its a quiet day with 3 guys online, they'd have the option.

Unfortunately to explain this one I would have to go a bit too far into how the radio system works on PE. So I'll have to leave it at that.

We have a system to let pilots know about deviations (see my first post), but generally it won't be in the form of a message through your client.

Got it. Guess I won't be monitoring guard to hear controllers yelling at people on PE in the foreseeable future.
