Common Shared Library, or at least that's the popular definition, I don't think I've ever see an official source quote what it actually stands for. CSLs are basically the external model of an aircraft, without any of the actual functionality that would make them flyable. They allow other users to see a model of what you're flying without actually having your aircraft.

thank you for clarifying. i like the concept. i guess i was under the impression that i would normally see other x-plane aircraft when we were at the same airport.

There is a limit to the number of X-Plane aircraft that can be loaded at a given time. So, instead of drawing actual aircraft (native to xplane), we draw objects that look like airplanes, but could just as easily have been houses or tubs of yogurt.

The HD CSLs use the same v8 OBJ files that are used to actually draw native xplane aircraft, so there is a lot of potential there.
