hearing ATC while tuned to ATIS

Post by Keith Smith »

As a result of the disabling of voice isolation and range logic when you're tuned to the controller who is responsible for working the ground positions, pilots were starting to hear other pilots while they were tuned to ATIS freqs. That's because ATIS freqs are shared with distant tower freqs. A good example would be 120.60 being the San Luis Obispo ATIS freq as well as the Ontario Tower frequency.

Historically, this wasn't a problem because while you were tuned to SBP ATIS in your sim, our system thought you were tuned to Ontario Tower, and as a result, you didn't hear anything. Since the voice isolation and range change, though, you would start hearing lots of pilots (not just those on Ontario tower, of course).

To fix this situation, the system is now aware of all the ATIS positions for the towered airports within the coverage area.

TL;DR: you will no longer hear pilots while you're tuned to nearby ATIS frequencies.

ATIS works? How did I miss this? Anything special to get it working or is it per sim?

I believe he is simply referring to your internal simulator ATIS.

Yes, simulator ATIS for now. The issue was that you would hear the simulator ATIS as well as pilots for the reasons described above. That's no longer an issue.
