Requesting Unpublished Hold

Post by chopowski »

Hi, is it acceptable to request an unpublished hold from ATC whilst in the air in order to practice them?

I can't see why it would be a problem. Depending on your equipment type, you'll likely get a hold at a VOR or a fix, so be prepared with a chart open. That said, you can practice a hold on your own without ATC involvement, so are you trying to practice:

1) the process of flying the hold pattern?
2) the process of adapting to a hold while in the middle of flying the route/IFR flight plan?

No problem with requesting it, it's not a common request but we do get them occasionally.
