NASA ASRS #425 - Speed

Post by gavink42 »

For those not familiar, the ASRS (Aviation Safety Reporting System) program:
Collects, analyzes, and responds to voluntarily submitted aviation safety incident reports in order to lessen the likelihood of aviation accidents.
In the June edition (Issue 425), ASRS Callback focuses on speed issues during approaches. It's great reading!

Very interesting, especially the last bit concerning the "descent vs APP" and the "ATC doesn't get energy management".

I have run into a few events where it seems like ATC doesn't realize what they are asking is literally impossible. Like holding me high and then trying to sequence a lear behind me. I cant make a high and sort approach in a DA40 while outrunning a Lear 60!

I wish pilots would say "unable" more often then... Yeah we ask pilots to do some weird things sometimes... but I think pilots are also afraid to say unable in a controlled environment (this is my RW experience as a controller - not on PE)

I feel I've got a solid grasp on what the pilot/plane can achieve (or not) because of my flying experience and also my flightsim experience and aircraft recognition and familiarization.
