Radio Voice Effect :D

Post by taymas »

Hi guys!

I was wondering if there is anything in the pipeline to add a radio-style sound to comms, such as with VatSim? There was a thread about 2 years ago:

/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2500&start=20

I was wondering if it is still being considered? Pretty please Keith??? :D

Please? :''''''(

Warmest Regards!

The standard answer makes sense, once you think about it:

The network is built (mostly) for a paying customer to learn ATC comms. Easiest way to learn is to be able hear everyone clearly and learn the phrasing and rhythm. VHF distortion would sound cool but might make the learning part harder. I waffle back and forth on this sometimes.

Some professional sims have gear to plug in real aviation headsets and you'll hear them from time to time on the network.

Hey Steve - I totally understand, and sort of expected that answer - though I don't believe that the distortion would be detrimental to learning, as we also have the ability to turn down the sim volume. A leisure we won't have in a real plane. It would also be great to have something like the distortion as an optional thing.

To me personally, having it as an optional selection through the PE plugin menu would be amazing for immersion's sake, and certainly to SIMULATE being in a real plane.

That being said, I know that the any distortion implemented won't exactly be like real life.

Is there anything I can change in the plugin to EQ the distortion in somehow? It might not be that simple, but if anyone knows any tweak I can apply that will add a high/low pass filter, you will have my love forever, and be remembered in any PE flight I have :D

Sorry to be so cringeworthy and cheesy, it's just me :D

Kindest Regards

Always the option of a on/off switch, though I would personally prefer more airports over distortion.

There are a few pilots who re-route the audio through Virtual Cable and run a number of audio filters over the audio to produce the desired result. That is your best bet right now.

The voice library that we now use is capable of doing these things through post-processing events, and we even have the ability degrade the audio as you approach the edge of the maximum reception distance. I'd also like to see different noise effects associated with certain transmitters (124.07 always sounds terrible in the New York area, for example) at some point. If anyone has a software development background and wants to tackle this, feel free.

It should be a relatively small amount of code to implement the post processing and I know which events to override in the SDK, but writing code for audio post-processing is not something I've done before, nor do I know exactly what filters need to be implemented. Otherwise, I'll look at it when I can, which is not likely to be soon.

My development cycles are very limited as I also balance it with sales and marketing. Right now, I'm spending all of my development time on a standalone PilotEdge Appliance which allows 3rd party manufacturers to hook their simulators into PilotEdge. This is going to be used in Level 6 FTDs and Level D full flight simulators.

i think real-life-style sound is important not only for immersion but to a costume your ears as well. I been flying a lot on PE lately for learning/practicing and every time i sit on the real thing i feel the shock of radio quality difference... my brain complains why this sh#t is not so clear than pe :D

But i do understand priorities. Non radio-style sound doesn't prevent learning ATC on PE at all, it could even facilitate initial learning procedural curve as already stated. If the network keeps growing and the business solid enough it will be there.

There is a free program called Voicemeeter Banana (link below) that is worth checking out. This program can add some of the equalizer and distortion effects that you might expect to hear from the real radios. Once installed it will add another audio output/input to your PC... all you have to do is redirect the audio you want to distort through the output, set it all up, and away you go. I used to use this application fairly extensively for streaming as it has things like noise gate, compression, and an equalizer for audio inputs.
