Corridor near KSBA

Post by WBEG »

Hello All,
Another question about air spaces. There is a military activities corridor near KSBA and I cannot figure out the best way to navigate it apart from flying over or under. It has a different symbol than a MOA so I am not sure if it follows the same rules. Can anyone suggest the correct approach?
Cheers

I _think_ you are referring the gray hashed area, inside which you have a light gray labeled airway IR245 and IR200. "Special Military Activity" IFR Training Routes in which the DOD conducts periodic operations involving Unmanned Aircraft Systems. These aircraft may be accompanied by military or other aircraft providing visual observation information regarding other aircraft to the pilots of the unmanned aircraft. [You can find this data on the Los Angeles VFR Chart, in the upper right portion of the legend.] You may fly through them without any special clearance, but keep a high awareness for such aircraft operations -- they move FAST. You can gain some peace-of-mind by contacting the controlling agency on the frequency on the chart [in this case, Hawthorne 122.2 or 122.3] to find out if they are "hot" or active. Or you can just remain above them.

That is exactly to which I was referring. Thanks for the advice.

When I'm flying CA97 to 66CA, I usually contact SBA Approach to find out if the corridor is hot or not. The chart says to contact Hawthorne Tower for status, but I've never been able to get them to respond when I'm sitting at CA97. I have seen drones cruising through there.

It's Hawthorne Flight Service (referred to as "Hawthorne Radio") that you'd contact for info, not Hawthorne Tower. Flight Service isn't simulated on PilotEdge.

That is an area which is set up to help provide extra vigilance for civilian aircraft operating near the IFR military training route. You'll see that the shape of the airspace basically encompasses the airspace on either side of the route. Cruster, as RyanK pointed out, double check the chart to see who to call.

In the real world, you could just ask whoever is giving you flight following for the status of the airspace as they will certainly be aware of any traffic on an IFR military training route.
