Yes you can. It's in the order somewhere that it is their responsibility to coordinate a transition through any airspace you may pass through. If they can't, they'll tell you to remain clear or terminate radar services.

If something happened to you once I bet the controller was too lazy to coordinate it or something and the local controller at whatever D you went through was upset maybe. They might have tried to blame you instead of correctly blaming the other radar controller.

Maybe Orlando Approach is just busy with MCO and the entire region of students but they rarely coordinate a transition outside of the Bravo area while flight following, they usually just tell you either climb above or go around or contact tower.
