fun night, holds at GCN!

Post by Keith Smith »

I plugged in this evening on the scope to help out with a group of arrivals into Grand Canyon airport, not knowing that the weather was 1100 broken, soon to drop to 900 overcast. With 5 arrivals in quick succession into a non-radar field in IMC, I was able to actually issue some real holds for everyone at CARMS on the ILS RWY 3 approach.

Break out your approach charts and see what you would do if you were RNAV-equipped and received these instructions:
"cleared direct CARMS, hold southwest as published, expect further clearance at 0525, time now 0455."

You'd then received some descents in the holding stack as planes cleared out and then at some point, "cleared straight-in ILS RWY 3 approach."

If you'd have asked me if I thought I'd ever work a stack of arrivals into GCN in IMC, I would've said, ".......no."

Outstanding job to all the pilots tonight. What a pleasure. It was also fun to work a single sector handling just a single arrival stream, it was a controlling dream come true and about as close to the experience of r/w controlling as we can get on here, rather than having to work a massive amount of airspace at the same time.

Marcus, I hope your technical issues didn't DAMPEN YAW spirits at the end there. On the bright side, your impending death DID result in the guy behind you getting to jump ahead of you in the approach. So, ya know, silver linings and all that ;)

I had to issue holding instructions to someone going into KAVX the other day. Pilot handled the unexpected hold very well.

I think I speak for everyone who did that flight on Friday night that it was one of the most fun nights we have all had on PE (well, except maybe not Marcus...). Thanks for jumping on Keith and joining in on the madness at the Canyon.
