Suppose I'm doing pattern work at KSNA and I also want to practice an ILS approach, e.g. a full approach via SLI as described in the training reference section.
Can I request doing this while in the pattern and how to do this?
regards,
Lisette

While you're in the pattern, you could request a departure to the northwest and a handoff to Socal for a practice approach. Once you're talking to Socal, tell them what you'd like to do and they'll sort it out.
If it helps, full approaches are covered in the I-6 rating of the training program. If you simply start from the I-1 and work your way through them, you'll eventually to the ILS RWY 20R full approach from SLI after departing LAX on an IFR flight, but if you want to do it sooner, feel free!

I will sometimes load up a new plane, request taxi for pattern work, then while in the pattern with Tower, request a directional departure out of the area and get prepped for an approach. Then, before leaving that safe area, I'll call the controller and request an ILS (vectors, full approach, via VOR, etc).
