Departing Long Beach VFR northbound?

Post by yajna »

What's the best way to go northbound VFR from Long Beach? Let's say I'm flying KLGB -> KPMD.

Option 1: Depart northeast and sneak under the Bravo at 1500 then climb over Pasadena to clear the San Gabriels.

Option 2: All the standard ODPs from KLGB end up at PADDR, southwest over the ocean. Follow that, then climb to 8500 and get the Hollywood Park route northbound.

Option 3: Similar to 2, but take the Coliseum route.

Option 1 is the most direct but the higher options would allow flying faster with less fuel burn. (I'm in a PC-12.) Would there be a faster way to join one of the Bravo transitions with less detour for climbing?

The shortest route northbound through the LAX class B out of an airport in the LGB area would be the miniroute. Blast off out of KLGB, climb to 2500, contact HHR TWR and request the miniroute. No climb detours required.

Option 4: SFRA through the Bravo. Doesn't require any ATC interaction if you're afraid of that sort of thing. Information can be found on the LA TAC chart.

Read the route instructions several times and make sure you understand everything required of you, such as oddball trasponder codes and speed restrictions. Especially mind your speeds in the SFRA. Easy for a PC-12 to blast past 140 KIAS.
