ATC Phraseology Question

Post by jdtribbs »

I am a RW student pilot starting to work though my Cats here on PE. I have a question about ATC phraseology that i am having trouble finding answers to.

After requesting a northbound departure i got back from tower "Cessna 3181X on course approved, cleared for take off runway 12."
I took "on course approved" as meaning "you may depart my airspace any way you feel like". But that was just a guess.

More accurate would be you can depart the airspace consistent with the direction you forecasted to clearance or ground (north, south, etc.). They clear you based on the understanding of where you intend to go.
