Getting out of Class B airspace with flight following

Post by sidfadc »

Hi all,

I've worked my way through the VFR workshops, what an absolutely fantastic learning experience. I feel like I'm a lot more knowledgeable and comfortable flying on the network. I'm currently working my way through the IFR workshops. Anyway one thing which I can't quite remember (I should have written a lot of stuff down) is the right procedure to get out of a large class B airspace like LAX.

Lets say I want to depart east from LAX to say Palm Springs, if I call clearance for flight following "east departure to Palm Springs", the controller will give me an initial heading and an altitude restriction, that's fine. What I'm a bit fuzzy about is my responsibility after take-off. I guess my question is until I exit the Bravo am I right in thinking ATC will give me continued vectors to keep me separated from IFR traffic and get me clear of the airspace? Once clear of the bravo I will be told to squawk VFR and resume own navigation?

Thanks
Sid

Tell clearance your interntions, if you want flight following, then that is part of your intentions.
Clearance will likely give you instructions per their local operating procedures.
From that point, follow instructions given by ATC "fly heading... on course approved... maintain VFR.... remain south of... etc..."
If you told a previous controller that you want flight following, it is likely that the controller you are talking to while exiting the bravo airspace will keep you under their services. If not, tell them before you get close to the boarder.

This is covered in the CAT-6 rating.

"East departure to Palm Springs" is supplying a direction of flight. It's not specifying a request for flight following. So, a better call would be, "LAX Clearance, Skyhawk 123AB, information Alpha, request flight following to Palm Springs at 9500."

The section at 35:52 - 37:03 was what helped me the most concerning this situation in said airspace. My favorite quote is at 36:52-37:02.
