To low to contact center?

Post by Kilstorm »

I was landing in KIDA Idaho falls last night and told Center after being established on the ILS that I would call once on the ground to cancelt my IFR FP. I switched Comm1 to KIDA Unicom to make the final call and then switched back to ATC to cancel but for some reason was unable to make radio contact?! Was I out of range for ATC at that point?

It sounds like it. I was listening to the recording from last night and heard you making the calls to center, but I didn't hear them at the time. It is likely that there are parts of the coverage area where radio comms with center don't exist all the way to the ground. That is certainly the case in real life, however, it's also the case in real life that there are phone numbers to call the center and flight service while on the ground, so this is something we'll have to think about. For now, cancel in the air if it's VMC.

Great to hear that PE is modeled to be as close to real life as possible and I look forward to becoming more comfortable with my radio calls and procedures.

Maybe the easiest way to solve this would be a generic flight service frequency like 122.50 which is available on all airports.
