KNRS and KSDM
KNRS and KSDM
Hello PilotEdgers! I had an airspace question and thought some of you whiz kids might know have an answer. I am staring at the airport KNRS and struggling to understand when it actually operates. Anyone have any experience with it's class delta airspace? It's right up against KSDM which makes it concerning. If I were to take off on runway 26R, I'm almost immediately placed into the KNRS's delta. I understand it's a short delta (1500'), but my Cessna 172 can't climb fast enough. How do you operate there in real life? How does PilotEdge handle this class Delta airspace? Thanks.
Re: KNRS and KSDM
I'm no expert on procedures in the USA, but I'd have thought remaining in SDM traffic pattern until above 1500 before setting course would work, or asking SDM ATC to coordinate a climbing transit before take off, might be another option?

KNRS isn't open 24 hrs. It's class D airspace when open and class G when it isn't. When departing SDM rwy 26 (which is in use 99% percent of the time due to prevailing winds), I usually ask for a right crosswind departure to the north and an early frequency change to call NRS for a transition request. Tower almost always gives it and then all you need is 2 way with NRS to start your westbound turn. If you can't get hold of NRS or they can't approve the transition, it's a short delay to climb to 1600' to go over the top from your right(north) crosswind departure. Field elevation at SDM is just over 500' so you only need to climb about 1000'.

NRS is military and is considered non-towered on the network. Regarding real world handling, my guess it's a moot point as you could either make a right turn-out on departure, or, you could out climb the Delta airspace even in a 172. Yes, it's a 1500ft delta, but you have 500ft head start because of SDM's field elevation. That means you have to climb 1000ft within ~2nm, or 500ft/nm. With a ground speed of 90kts (that would be high, for sure, especially given a typical headwind), that's 1.5nm/min, which translates to a 750ft/min climb rate in the worst case. Realistically, if you keep it closer to 60kts groundspeed, the required climb rate gets closer to 500ft/min.
Give it a try in your 172, my guess is you'll out climb the NRS delta.

Re: KNRS and KSDM
Update: just test flew this in the stock 172 in X-Plane 11, max gross (worst case), 5kt tailwind (also pretty much worst case), reached 1500ft prior to reaching the Delta. It was close, but again, this is max gross and with a tailwind. Change either of those two cases and it becomes even easier.

Re: KNRS and KSDM
how about planning a VFR cross country from KNZY to KSAN. I plan to use RWY 36 at KNZY.
