Is it true that when flying VFR you don't actually ask for clearance through charlie a/s?
You only need the controller to call your callsign? or something like that, correct?
if so... then how do you ask for "clearance" through the charlie if you shouldn't be asking for clearance?
how do you get "clearance" through Charlie a/s?

You are on the right track. You don't get a clearance through Charlie airspace because a clearance is not required. The requirement is simply that you establish two way communications with the controller that has jurisdiction over the Charlie airspace.
We have a workshop that covers VFR airspace and regulations...you'll love it (if you have time to watch it!): http://pilotedge.net/workshops, scroll all the way to the bottom (the first one, by date). Full screen...high def. Enjoy.
Then, the next few workshops cover flight planning through various types of airspace, including Charlie.
