real time map popups

Post by Keith Smith »

Google has new map interface which is affecting the styling of the pop up labels on the real time map at http://map.pilotedge.net. We're going to look into it. The map works, but the popups don't look great right now.

Brings to mind a long-standing question I've had but not asked. Any chance of changing the mapping to something similar to SkyVector, so we could select VFR or IFR charts for the map?

Another PE map issue I've recently started having is that my mouse wheel no longer zooms in/out on my PC. I think it works on my Mac though, oddly. Regular Google maps is not effected.

If the goal is to see where you are, overlaid on a sectional chart, then a local solution like Foreflight or another aviation mapping solution with GPS integration would be a good way to go. Unless there's an easy way to get Google Maps to show a sectional, I don't think it's going to happen. Skyvector doesn't have an API for extending their maps.

The idea wasn't intended to track one's own flights. I use ForeFlight, and you're right... those types of mapping are the best way to go.

The thought was mainly for use while "lurking". Listening to live PE audio and watching the map. It would be a better learning experience to see the PE map with instrument charts. My sim has been offline for a while, and that's the best I can do right now.

Skyvector is a fine service that I use extensively. But they are notoriously against other applications using their maps in any way without a "paying license agreement" - their terminology from the forum. Since they are about the best known, I was using them as an example in my question.

gotcha. I'm for it if there is an easy way do it, but otherwise, not so much.

Map is fixed, thanks Tim. You will likely need to hit REFRESH in your browser to get the latest code which fixes the popups.
