This morning I flew from KVCV to KSEE and filed requesting DIRECT to KSEE from the ROBNN intersection on V186. The clearance I was given routed me past KSEE to HAILE intersection, then away from KSEE to MZB via V66 then DIRECT back to KSEE. I received vectors for a visual approach to KSEE after passing ROBNN, so I received what I requested when I filed.
I'm just curious to know why that routing was given. Is there a different way of filing that I should be using to receive vectors direct to the airport or approach? Should I question the clearance if the routing doesn't make sense? Can I refuse the routing and request something more direct? What would have been the best way to handle this?
Thanks.

Re: Question about IFR routing
Maybe I can answer my own question. It occured to me that perhaps I was given the routing through MZB so that I had a way of getting to the airport in case of a communications failure. The direct route from MZB would set me up nicely for the localizer approach to KEES.

Re: Question about IFR routing
Perhaps because there is no way to navigate from a fix to the airport in case of nordo and you can't assume GPS availability in routings? So you just file that route and then request or receive vectors when approaching the terminal area.
