KLAS-KLAX MCCAREN3 Departure - RIIVR2 STAR

Post by Frank Pate »

I'll be on Twitch Sunday (April 27) about 0030 ZULU. (8:30PM Eastern) I will announce the flight from Twitch.com for those that are following me. I'll be flying a sudo practice I9 using the MCCARRAN3 from LAs arriving on the infamous RIIVR2 Arrival to LAX in a Lear Jet only using /Alpha avionics. My luck they will be landing east and I'll have to learn a new chart on the fly) The Lear is an aircraft I only have about 4 hours logged in the simulator and FMS equates to 3 letters of the alphabet for me cause I just never used it or learned it (yet). Never used it and have no idea how to make it go so comments about it will be answered with puns and light hearted banter. You will see how behind the aircraft I get, and some guesswork on what to do next navigation wise and aircraft handling wise. I am streaming this mainly for the newbies or members that fear pushing the envelope. With a bit of luck and some communication skills, I should get thru it. So far 2 attempts landed me on a runway without too much pain and terrain never just "appeared" in my wind screen.

Don't expect a full cockpit checklist on cabin and crew amenities. For this flight, it is a cockpit crew of one with no passengers and a care in the world for maintaining cabin pressure or paying much attention to N2 or ITT, ABC or whatever those acronyms are. But, crash detection is on and realism set to crash if I exceed aircraft tolerances... airframe and engine included. So I know enough to harness the power levers if red thingys flash on the engine readouts and "Don't Sink" is echoed in the cockpit. My focus is on procedure and my comments on TWITCH CHAT will only come after the cruise portion is established to HEC and from HEC to my first turn on the arrival. Before and after that I will be making insane comments unheard to ATC and wont care to look on Twitch chat to answer quips and jokes as I focus on the panel.

All the while you will see how auto-pilot is mismanaged and VOR tracking becomes a sinusoidal afterthought as I focus all on the wrong things. A training flight first hand with all the mistakes included. Dont expect much except hearing behind the scences grunts and groans as I anticipate whats next and deal with the unknown that I am instructed with. Not a keith Smith Video by any stretch, but something I hope new or inexperienced people will appreciate seeing. Depending on winds aloft, (yes I fly real weather but daytime so the video will come out better) expect about an hour flight. Expect poor aircraft handling, and expect seeing how mistakes may be overcome with better than ok communication skills.... maybe.
