Handflying Difficult Xplane 9

Post by sellener777 »

Im using the sim for IFR profieicny. My previouis setup was laptop running msfs 2004 with a ch yoke and pilotedge. That setup was awesome and valuable for profieccny. The default C182 IFR panel was good enough and the flight charactorsitics were also good. The flight charcatoristics were good because the sim required enough attention to trimming it out for climb or cruise that it made your brain stay "ahead" of the aircraft. Most my flights are hand flown. The flight model trimmed out good for climb and cruise so you could take 10 seconds to copy a clearance or right a freq down or set a freq in the radio.

I recently went to a new PC with xplane 9 and a saitek yoke. The Issue I have is the flight models I have used: default c172 and carenado 210, take 10 times more effort to trim for "hands off," flying. And hands off isnt accurate cause I am constanyl clicking pitch and roll trim. Never had to use roll trim in MSFS for hands off flying.

I tried fsx and the default c172 flys much easier hands off. I am new to xplane9 and have tweaked the calibrations, null zones, linear stuff. I have messed with the input in input out stuff as well.

I like xplane because the weather is awesome, the PTT is easy to program, and the fact I invested in it. But if it cant fly hands off for 10 seconds it is not going to be a good training tool.

any ideas?

Is theyre any way to "numb up," the flying charactoristics to fly much more stable?

Would plane maker have adjustments that would effect the stability of the handflying characteristics in xplane? IE: id like to numb up the whole airplance so it flys hands off with more stability. Not going for realism, just need it to handfly stable enough to let go of yoke for 10 seconds at a time without having the thing in a steep turn when i look up. Using it for IFR training with students, and I like them hamndflying to devolep prioritization skills but if the plane cant trim out for 10 seconds witout trim or yoke imput, it is difficult to copy a clearance or multitask approriately.

the stock 172 has unusually-effective control surfaces, I would avoid it. The model isn't right in terms of drag, either...full flap, idle power, it still comes down like a feather.
