Approachong Top of Descent

Post by ceranes »

What is the proper way to begin your descent once reaching the top of descent point? Should I wait for ATC to give me crossing restriction when flying a STAR, or should I call him up before reaching the TOD point, and ask to descend? Last night, I ended up having to descend initially at about 6,000 fpm just to connect up with the descent profile the FMC had calculated for me.

Those loud noises you heard from behind you in the cabin... they were your passengers eardrums exploding!

If you're approaching TOD for a restriction you're fairly certain is going to be issued, I would inform ATC, "approaching top of descent for CLARR if you want us to make the restriction."

ATC normally issues the crossing restrictions prior to TOD but if not, say something.

Understood...if for example I am flying to an airport, but not flying a particular arrival, but flying direct a particular IAF, the FMC has calculated a nice smooth descent path for me, and just so our passengers don't explode from the steep descent (as our esteemed colleague, Mr. Gavink42 wrote previously), would I ask to descend direct the IAF?

Use the phrase "Request Lower"

By no means should you descend without ATC clearance.... unless they previously said "descend via the XYZ arrival"
