iMac 5k Retina Desktop

Post by JustinWheat »

I have been a windows user forever and here recently I have become interested in Mac. Anyone running X Plane 10 on the new Imac 5K desktop? What are the advantages/disadvantages with this software setup? Can you really even compare Mac to windows when it comes to flightsim? Thanks for any help in this matter.

The 5K iMac will get about 5 FPS better from the non-retina iMac with the 4790K and M295X with resolution dropped to 2560x1440. When not streaming, I get about 34-39 FPS with my Late 2013 iMac with the 4670 and 780M. The killer is the screen on the 5K. It can't run X-Plane all that well at the full 5K resolution( no GPU can right now, not even the 980).

It all depends on the machine you're coming from, what settings you're willing to run at, etc. I am happy with my performance on my Late 2013 27" iMac while running X-Plane. Though I am considering installing Windows on it considering OS X NVIDIA drivers suck to see how much of a boost I would get, but AMD drivers on OS X are fine( where it is vice versa for Windows).

The thing I would be concerned about is heat. I have been reading the M295X likes to run hot. And what I mean hot is by hitting 100 C+ quite easily. Though that is under different games and tasks( not many have reported their temps with X-Plane). My 780M hits 62-66 C with X-Plane running with the fan sped up to 2600 RPM( 80 C using Apple's stock fan control). Unless you really want that screen, I would go with the top of the line non-retina iMac if X-Plane performance is important.

But without doubt Windows, Intel, and NVIDIA is better for X-Plane. But like I said I am happy with X-Plane's performance on my iMac at my current settings.
