I have an IPC next week, and I'd like to practice some partial panel, either vacuum or pitot-static failure. If I was VMC and could maintain VMC no big deal but I'd love to practice an IFR / IMC scenario. I would set the failure in FSX. Is this something I could coordinate with the controllers or is that necessary? If I was IMC and couldn't get VMC easily I would probably declare an emergency and get vectors to an ILS to a best wx field.
Thanks!
BTW, not saying all would end well, but better in the sim...

Re: Planned failures
No need to coordinate ahead of time. Simply request non-gyro vectors if that's what you'd like and declare the emergency if you see fit. Partial panel with today's technology (backup attitude indicator, or a PFD driven by an AHRS, or ForeFlight with the Stratus AHRS) is a lot different than a traditional partial situation. Even without a lot of those things, even a GPS showing the TRK field will do a great job of keeping you on course.
Have at it and let us know how it goes! Better yet, do a screen capture and post it on YT so we can all watch/learn

Re: Planned failures
Thanks Keith. I'll give it a go. I've done a fair number of PP scenarios, both sim offline and RW, and even tho I now fly a steam gauge Archer, between the GNS430 and ForeFlight mounted on the yoke you can get a lot of good backup Info. I don't have an AHRS or Stratus but like you said, GPS Trk, Alt and VSI can save the day. Hardest part is recognition and getting stabilized with the right configuration on FF. Adding ATC and the "realism factor" of PE will be a great plus. If I can figure it out I'll try a Twitch broadcast and archive it. Might be colorful!
