Flights outside the coverage area

Post by pkofman »

Am I allowed to file ifr outside of the PE coverage area for a flight that will terminate in the socal airspace , say Denver to lax
I would like to do this sort of thing in a pmdg 737
If it is allowed, do I assume I would pick up my clearance just before I enter the pilotedge monitored territory?
Is this allowable. Peter

That type of flight is fine. Make sure you file the flight plan through PE and when you approach PE airspace contact the appropriate CTR frequency. I have done that flight in the past.

Look through the recent topics and the PE Facebook page and you'll see the possibility of expanded PE coverage to the KDEN area.

Hi Peter, thanks for your question. John is right on target. Once you near the controlled airspace, ATC will assign you a Squawk and continue your guidance and instruction on an assumed IFR clearance; meaning, that you will not be issued a new clearance in the air because it is assumed you were on a clearance that you received from your departure airport's Delivery controller. The exception to that would be in the event that you filed something that is non-standard for our operations, in which case you would simply receive an amended routing.

You must make the initial contact. In some other online circumstances, you may be accustomed to waiting for a contact message, but here you must be diligent to know about when you would be entering the airspace and contact the appropriate controller. You can always verify by referencing the map accessible via the website. And, don't worry about calling the wrong frequency by accident. We'll simply ship you off to the appropriate controller.

Enjoy your flights!

Excellent. Anthony
Im a bit confused though. Lets say I take off from KDEN ( using a preferred sid. routing and assumed star). heading towards KLAX
I would be filing a plan on pilot edge . I would not have a clearance from anyone as PE does not cover KDEN
My assumption is simply to file as i do in the real world and once i hit the airspace limit ( or just before ) I would make contact and request clearance. If I dont get a clearance i would hold until receiving some form of contact or validation, or until I simply make contact rather than violate the PE airspace
If all is ok, once contact is made I would proceed via the flight plan route with the assigned xpdr code unless changed
Basically, as you stated, but there is no initial controller so im operating on the basis of my filed plan
Hope thats clear but ill just give it a shot as hopefully I get it right.....Pete

It's ok to request the clearance at the boundary, or you can simulate the case where you already had a clearance (as you would've received in real life). This is going to be less of a frequent issue once the airspace expansion takes place (Denver will be covered by the expansion).
