Best run-up positions

Post by uncertifiedpilot »

Hello,

Not all airports have designated run-up areas or extended taxiways to do run-ups, it seems most Delta or non-controlled ones.

a) In those particular cases where no designated run-up areas are around, where do I safely do my run-ups? I read others say never to do run-ups at the runway threshhold or at the ramp... but what suitable spots are left over then?

b) Should I request permission with Ground anytime I decide do a run-up? Or only when I choose to do a run-up at an (designated) area NOT at the end of the taxiway instruction I received by Ground?

Thank you,
Tim

If you can't find a big vacant non movement area to do one, just ask ATC on your taxi (or even before) where a good spot to do one would be.

I do mine on the ramp a lot...

On the PE network, communication with ATC is the key. This is supposed to be a learning environment for you, so when you get your taxi instructions from the ground controller, just inform them you'll be doing a run-up at location "X" like "at the end of taxiway A" and they will counter with something different if needed. In my own experience, declaring you intentions is the biggest tip I could give someone on the network (besides "be prepared, be brief").

In RW most of the class D I have been at have an area or you are the only guy so if there is not an area 45 deg it close to the runway and get it done.

The three class C I have been in, ground has always asked if I require a run up after they give me taxi instructions. I say yes and they have told me where to do it on the route the gave me. For example, perform Run Up on Alpha holding short of A5 advise when run up is complete. If they did not give me this I would just ask.
