X-plane 10 simulation speed possible problem

Post by tgray106 »

Can't figure this one out, and hoping someone can pinpoint how to look into it or fix it.

I was doing pattern work around KSBP the friday afternoon, and a) was happy to see that no one was there at first so I could relax a little bit, and then b) as soon as I took off, someone else popped in to do pattern work as well, so, yay more radio and traffic practice.

But, whoever was working tower pointed something out when checking the speed of the two of us in the air. Looked like even though I was reading 75 kts on final, I was going slower, and kept getting overtaken by the Cessna (I was flying an Archer PA28 if that makes any difference)

I've also noticed that when I planned another flight, off PE, I was almost 2x behind my estimated times, but I hadn't adjusted any of the sim speed settings.

I've flown other times where I've been fairly spot on (+/- a few minutes, didn't take into effect winds or anything, all VFR too)

I occasionally pop on the SkyCharts app and can see my ground speed reads much slower than I would assume it should be, maybe 20-30 kts slower, and after checking winds, it shouldn't be that much different.

Is there something that I can look at in settings that may be changing my sim rate, such as frame rates or computer speed?

Check your sim rate. Start at 9:25

You mention checking winds, which could cause a discrepancy between pilots running different weather.

Another issue could be frame rate. If your frame rate drops below 19 fps, X-Plane slows the simulation down below realtime. If your frame rate is indeed dropping below 19 fps, I'd suggest lower some rendering settings or using a dynamic LOD/cloud adjustment plugin such as 3jFPS to improve your frame rates.

Kyle's got it. Briefly, your frame rate in the area you're flying was probably dropping to 19 or below and the sim started running in less than real time. Adjust your rendering options to get a better frame rate and more of a real time experience. It should also fix your ground speed.

Also, moderation note, I moved this to the xplane forum since it's 100% related to xplane.

Was finally able to try that out a bit, and spot on. Adjusting things to get the frame rate up a bit more got things a little more aligned and SkyCharts was reading accurately.

Thanks everyone!
