Passed I-02 After 3rd Try!

Post by signmanbob »

I'm finding that you learn more by failing the test a couple of times :|

• 1st try I took the taxi instructions as : "Taxi to 20L via ALFA, HOTEL and CHARLIE", ....I missed one thing because the instructions actually were..."Taxi to 20L at KILO via ALFA, HOTEL and CHARLIE". I assumed that since I didn't copy the "KILO" part, or any entrance to the runway, that it didn't matter if I took the full runway....WRONG!....fail #1
One lesson learned...never assume anything. If I wanted the full runway, I should have just asked.

• 2nd try I got almost all the way to OCN, when the controller said for me to turn to heading 090. I heard 090 and repeated 090 back, but turned my heading to 009...Ouch!...fail #2
Second lesson learned...stop and think about what you're doing before you dial in a heading or dispatch an instruction.

• 3rd try passed (Whew, beginning to feel like the movie "Groundhog Day")

By the 3rd time, I was getting much less nervous and I really learned a lot by having to redo the test several times. I think that I really benefited by it and I appreciate the controllers allowing me to keep trying until I passed. Really the challenge is what makes it so much fun.

Wow! Great perseverance! Keep it up!
You don't have a limit of times you can take a test. I know of one person taking a test over 30 times before he got it right. It was very obvious with this person that he wasn't reading the required material and would just fix what he messed up on THAT time the next time. That isn't the way to go about it, but taking three times at the I-2... Consider it lessons learned as you are and keep it moving!
The I-10... That is a big one. My favorite and you need to "know" what is going on. The free workshops are a big help. I would suggest you start watching these as you go through the ratings : http://www.pilotedge.net/workshops

Thank you Kyle. You're a big help. I appreciate it very much.
Oh gosh, 30 times!!? That's scary.
I do read through the instructions on each of the ratings before I attempt to do it and I'm really trying to learn as much about ATC communications as I possibly can. I'm taking the private lessons with Peter which are helping me a lot. I'm reading a book on IFR communications (I've already read one on VFR communications and airspace) plus I bought several online courses which have also taught me quite a bit.
I have also been watching Keith's video workshops on YouTube.
I'm feeling a lot better about it and not as nervous. I still get nervous, but much less now.

I tried to take my I-03 rating with P3D, after I thought I had it fixed from the last two crashes while on PilotEdge, but it did another big ugly crash to desktop. Then I tried again to take the I-03 Rating with X-Plane, and I believe I was doing good, when X-Plane crashed the exact same way that P3D crashed.
I thought....Hmmmmm. So I upgraded my video card driver. The Windows Log showed the same nvoglv64.Dll as the cause of the crashes on both simulators, and I believe that looks like a nVidia OpenGL driver.
I believe that may solve my problem. I did a short offline flight with X-Plane and it did good.
Hopefully (fingers crossed) upgrading my video card driver will do the trick for me. I'll try the I-03 again tomorrow.
