ATC/IFR advice and feedback request

Post by Swami121 »

Hello PilotEdgers,

I'm new to the service and also preparing to start my IFR training.

Last night I filed a flight plan from KTOA to KBUR. After getting my clearance:

Cleared to the Burbank Airport, fly runway heading to intercept the Los Angeles 170 radial, direct to Limbo, Victor 64, SCTN1 climb and maintain 3000, expect 4000 1-0 minutes after departure, Departure frequency 134.9, squawk 1564.

My question is around waypoint Limbo. Since KBUR is north and the SCTN1 includes SMO VOR, I figured I'd be heading north. However, with that clearance, I intercepted LA 170 and went south to Limbo. Once there, I executed a right turn to SMO. The controller came online a few minutes after the turn to let me know I was off course.

So my question is, should I have executed that turn differently? I did note that I did not receive any alternate instructions or flight heading so I followed the flight clearance as I had noted while on the ground.

Swami,

You are correct in making your turn from LIMBO northbound onto V64. You should have been issued the SMO125R as well, as V64 does not provide you with a way to navigate onto the SCTN1 TEC route after the LAX VORTAC. Edit: See Keith's reply below.

I also must highlight an error in your description of your route. Above you said "Intercept the Los Angeles 170 radial direct to LIMBO." The word "direct" is not appropriate in this instance. The clearance should have been read back as "Intercept the Los Angeles 170 radial to LIMBO."

Another great thing about the service... It's recorded. Find the time that you flew and listen to the audio to make sure you heard correctly :)

I listened the ATC audio from this flight: http://peaware.pilotedge.net/flight.cfm?id=162257 (which was on the 24th, not the 25th as it turns out). What you were cleared for (LAX R-170 LIMBO then the SCTN1 TEC route) and what you should have been cleared for (LAX R-170 LIMBO V64 SMO R-125 SMO then the SCTN1 TEC route) were two different things.

The controller's initial instructions weren't correct, however, the flight strip on the ATC side actually reflected the route that should've been issued. A shift change occurred later in the flight, and as a result, the new controller noticed a difference between your flight path and the path that was on your flight progress strip.

This was an error on our side, we'll resolve it, sorry about the confusion.

Another note, had the clearance been issued correctly, then the actual flight path would've been V64 eastbound (not northbound) to intercept the SMO R-125 inbound to SMO, then the SMO R-311 to SILEX. It would not have been correct to fly V64 northbound.

This is correct. I forgot that radial cannot be intercepted from V64 northbound!

The first time I flew this route I "assumed" that northbound intercept, even with the clearance issued correctly.

thanks for all of the advice and clarity. I've just started dipping my toes into IFR as a way to prepare myself for training and sometimes I feel like I'm in the deep end of the pool!

Edit: I read the link attached which explains this route. I see where I made my mistake.
