Apologies

Post by aventura »

I need to apologize to controllers and fellow pilots I may have annoyed. A couple of days ago I flew my Piper from AZ03 to KGCN, but I thought KGCN was part of the west extension map and thus treated it as an untowered airport.
I later discovered KGCN is actually fully covered by our awesome controllers. I couldnt see other traffic nearby, but I can still imagine the controller annoyed at me for landing there without establishing radio contact!
Lesson learned.

I'd treat non-staffed towered airports in the western expansion as I'd treat them after hours in real life. The airspace reverts to Class E or G and you make traffic calls on the CTAF frequency (usually same as tower). If you had done that at KGCN, you would have received a reply on frequency that the tower was in fact part of ZLA and staffed.

Indeed. The stupid thing is that I went to the CTAF frequency (119.0) and I heard a controller talking. Unfortunately, I stupidly assumed that the same frequency was being used by an approach or center nearby, not realizing that this of course wouldn't be possible on pilotedge as the services always uses real life frequencies, and I switched to unicom :-(
