worst preflight in history

Post by Keith Smith »

My local flight school republished some content from my flying blog, thinking it might be of interest to their students. I thought I'd share it here as an example of how nerve wracking it can be to get from the car to a working airplane :)

It's a bit of light relief, but I won't lie, it was hard not to get frazzled by the end of it.

Has anyone else had one of those days where it takes you forever to get on your way after arriving at the airport?

I had a fun one which resulted in not flying at all. The plan was to fly to a family Thanksgiving about 190 miles away. Flying would have been significantly shorter and more fun than the 4 hour drive. The weather wasn't great, mostly because it was pretty windy, but not out of the question windy (I thought).

We get to the airport, get everything ready. Grab a briefing. Taxi out, run up. Looking great. Check the AWOS once more. The wind has jumped up 10-15 knots, with higher gusts and an unforecast cloud layer is moving in really quickly. Well. Crap. That just took the day from breezy to well out of my comfort range. So, we taxied back and put everything away and drove 4 hours. :(

Turns out the wind everywhere was significantly higher than forecast. The cloud layer didn't last long, but still a better choice overall to not fly.

Ive done preflights in yuma that were so hot that by the time you were done you had no interest in climbing into the steaming cockpit.
