Filing for Practice Approaches

Post by rgrazian »

Hello PE team,

I have an operational PE question. I'd like to shoot multiple approaches in IMC. For example, I'd like to take off from KVNY, shoot a few approaches at KSMO and then back to KVNY for a couple. How would you prefer I file that?

Example:

KVNY to KVNY

Remarks: Practice approaches at KSMO and back to KVNY (flying IMC)

where do you want to go if you lose comms? file that as the destination.

I typically file to the first airport, then do popups after that.

Agreed. If you wanted practice approaches at VNY... I'd file something like KVNY FIM KVNY.... and then make your mult app request with clearance. Where I work we give the pilots radar vectors (it's a standard operating procedure) which in my eyes is dumb because there's not really a lost comms fix with radar vectors. Yes we assume they'll land at our airport but via which approach? I'm not an instrument pilot so I don't know... but we assume the advertised approach on the ATIS.

Anyway I chose FIM for your example because it's an IAF on a few of the approaches.
